Transparent Window, Glass Table adopts “transparency” as the main keyword to look closer into each artist’s form and methodology. At the same time, “window” and “table” serve as the medium through which the artists’ perceptions and approach to the real world or art are visualized and brought to the surface through their works. In this sense, it is far from a sense of “transparency” in which an external object is reflected or depicted as it is. Rather, it is “abstraction” which Joan Mitchell explains, “I paint the landscapes outside the window, but I could never possibly copy that. I try to paint the remembered feelings of nature, which of course become transformed in my own languages. While I paint, I always paint with windows closed so I can’t see what’s outside.” The “window” that guides the exhibition is a passage that connects the inside and the outside and welcomes thoughts and emotions through its unique visual language. 

The four artists in this exhibition - Cai Ruei-Heng, Daniel Chen, Seoul Kim, and Yang-ha - choose the major foundation and form of their work, such as figurative, abstract, or semi-abstract painting, and pursues their unique methodologies by continuing their multifaceted approaches and experiments within the given framework. In this context, the canvas becomes a “workbench” that highlights the “uniqueness” that comes from their distinct choices in the specific form which replaces the conventions found in history of art with their characteristic visual language. In this space, artists uncover their emotions or contradictions found in the real world, and construct a visual language by performatively examining the conditions of painting themselves. 
‘투명한 창, 유리 테이블’은 작가별 형식과 방법론을 보다 가까이 들여다볼 수 있도록, ‘투명함’을 중심 키워드로 내건다. 동시에 ‘창’, ‘테이블’은 작가들이 작품에서 드러내는 현실세계나 예술에 대한 인식과 태도를 가시화해 수면 위로 띄워 올리는 매개로 제시된다. 그런 점에서 외부의 대상을 있는 그대로 비추거나 그려낸다는 의미의 ‘투명성’과는 거리가 있다. 자신의 ‘추상’은, “창 밖 풍경을 그리지만, 자연을 보이는 그대로 복사하려는 게 아니라 그 아름다움에 대한 느낌과 감정을 나만의 언어로 담아내려는 것이다. 작업을 하는 동안 밖이 보이지 않게 창을 닫아 놓는다”는 조안 미첼(Joan Mitchell)의 말은 여기서도 유효하다. 전시에서 일컫는 ‘창’은 곧 고유의 시각언어로 안과 밖을 연결하고, 생각과 감정을 드러내는 상호작용의 통로다.

이번 전시에서 소개되는 카이 루이 헝(Cai Ruei-Heng), 다니엘 첸(Daniel Chen), 김서울(Seoul Kim), 양하(Yang-ha) 네 작가는 구상, 추상, 반추상 등 작업의 주축을 이루는 양식을 정하고, 조건 지은 틀 안에서 다각적인 접근과 실험을 지속하며 자신만의 방법론을 모색한다. 따라서 작가들에게 캔버스는 긴 시간 이어져온 미술의 흐름 안에서 특정 형식을 선택하고 작가 특유의 시각언어로 치환함으로써 ’차별성‘을 부각하는 ‘작업대’가 된다. 그 위에서 작가들은 내면의 정서나 현실세계의 모순을 드러내기도 하고, 회화의 조건 자체를 수행적으로 고찰하면서 시각언어를 구축하기도 한다.

Cai Ruei-Heng
 (b.1989) graduated from National Formosa University (Taiwan) with a B.S. in Industrial Management and Taipei National University of the Arts (Taiwan) with a M.F.A. in Fine Arts. He has held solo exhibitions at YIRI ARTS (2023, Taipei), Fish Art Centre (2022, 2020, Taipei), IRL Brooklyn (2021, New York), and Telling Arts (2017, Taipei). He has also participated in various group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), Galerie Pierre (2022, Taichung), YIRI ARTS (2022, Taipei), London Paint Club (2021, Online), Kuan Art Space (2020, Taichung), Cerulean Art Colony (2018, Keelung), Telling Arts (2018, Taipei) and Elsa Gallery (2016, Taipei). In 2017, he was selected for the OPEN STUDIO residency at Taipei National University of the Arts.

Daniel Chen (b.1997) graduated from Rhode Island School of Design (Rhode Island) with a B.F.A. in Painting. He has held his debut solo exhibition at Capsule Shanghai (2023, Shanghai). He has participated in various group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), Blanc Art Space (2022, Beijing), Really Supercar (2022, Shanghai), Studio Gallery (2021, Shanghai), Memorial Hall (2019, Providence RI), Gelman Gallery (2018, Providence RI), Dedee Shattuck Gallery (2018, Westport MA), Civic Art Center (2018, Galesburg IL), Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment (2016, Huntsville AL). He was selected for the Florence Lief Award, Studios Midwest Residency, Dumfries House Award, Lowe Mill Artist in Residence.

Seoul Kim (b.1988) holds MFA in Painting from Kookmin University, College of Arts, Seoul. He has held solo shows ≪Sonata for a Beautiful Soul≫ (ThisWeekendRoom, Seoul, 2021), ≪A beautiful mind≫(Art Delight, Seoul, 2020), and ≪Uncolored≫(Art Delight, Seoul, 2019). He has also participated in various group shows, including ≪Transparent Window, Glass Table≫(KICHE, Seoul, 2023), ≪Hand to Eye≫(BOL Gallery, Singapore, 2023), ≪Layered≫(Art Station, Seoul, 2022), ≪The Perigee Winter Show 2021≫ (Perigee Gallery, Seoul, 2021), ≪The Boundary of Abstraction≫(Ami Art Museum, Dangjin, 2021), ≪Gradation: From Red to Golden≫(Munito Yeonnam showroom, 2020) and ≪Soul Seoul: Contemporary Art from Korea≫(Art Delight, Seoul, 2020). He was a selected artist for the 2021, 2019 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Artist Support Program.

Yang-ha (b.1994) graduated from Ewha Womans University (Seoul) with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts and Frank Mohr Institute (Netherlands) with a M.F.A. in Painting. She has held solo exhibitions at OCI Museum (2023, Seoul), Sahngup Gallery (2022, Seoul), Space 100_0 (2021, Seoul), Gasamrojieul (2021, Seoul), H47 (2021, Leeuwarden).    Recent group exhibitions include KICHE (2023, Seoul), YPC (2023, Seoul), The Korean Cultural Centre of Germany (2023, Berlin), Space Mirage (2023, Seoul), The Green Room (2023, Amsterdam), Josilda da Conceição Gallery (2022, Amsterdam), Sign Gallery (2022, Groningen), Platform-L Contemporary Art Center (2021, Seoul), Unit 1 Gallery (2021, London), Show and Tell (2021, Seoul), Jungganjijeom (2020, Seoul), Art Space M (2019, Seoul), Chang Ucchin Museum of Art (2018, Yangju) and more. 카이 루이-헝 (b.1989)은 국립 포모사 대학교 산업경영 학사 졸업 후, 국립 타이베이 예술대학 미술학 석사를 졸업했다. 개인전은 YIRI ARTS (2023, 타이베이), Fish Art Centre (2022, 2020, 타이베이), IRL Brooklyn (2021, 뉴욕), Telling Arts (2017, 타이베이)에서 가졌고 기체 (2023, 서울), Galerie Pierre (2022, 타이중), YIRI ARTS (2022, 타이베이), London Paint Club (2021, 온라인), Kuan Art Space (2020, 타이중), Cerulean Art Colony (2018, 지룽), Telling Arts (2018, 타이베이), Elsa Gallery (2016, 타이베이) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. 2017년에는 국립 타이베이 예술대학의 OPEN STUDIO 레지던시에 선정됐다.

다니엘 첸 (b.1997)은 로드아일랜드 디자인 스쿨 회화과를 졸업했다. Capsule Shanghai (2023, 상하이)에서 첫 개인전을 가졌고, 그룹전으로 기체 (2023, 서울), Blanc Art Space (2022, 베이징), Really Supercar (2022, 상하이), Studio Gallery (2021, 상하이), Memorial Hall (2019, 프로비던스), Gelman Gallery (2018, 프로비던스), Dedee Shattuck Gallery (2018, 웨스트포트), Civic Art Center (2018, 게일스버그), Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment (2016, 헌츠빌)에 참여하였다. 그는 Florence Lief Award, Dumfries House Award을 수상했고, Studios Midwest Residency, Lowe Mill Artist in Residence에 선정됐다.
