KICHE is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition titled Landscape and Depth at KICHE on Oct. 24. This exhibition, curated by the Chinese curator Xia Yanguo, features artworks by 5 artists from different countries, Rudy Cremonini, Lucas Kaiser, Lee Dong Hyuk , Amba Sayal-Bennett, Shih Yung Chun.

The exhibition, based on the two concepts of landscape and depth, refers to Cezanne for the reflection of how reality and art are related, how artists avail themselves of art to reveal what is often neglected in life, as well as how art goes beyond duality so as to reach the depth.
 

The five artists featured at this exhibition, at different depth, respond to issues on different levels in our social reality. Major or minor, these issues matter when we face them and free ourselves of prejudice and restart thinking. In Lucas’s works, from daily life and old fairy tales generate distorted and uncanny surreal landscape, indefinable new space; the strangeness in Rudy’s works shows how reality reveals itself while vanishing gradually, with images popping into our view like instinct hovering over the paintings; each of Amba’s works constitutes a self-contained entity of multiplicity with the resistance in terms of language in a seemingly quasi-mechanical order; Shih Yung Chun’s works build stubborn realistic landscape in which quotidian items regain freedom by the loss of their function, so a new order is born in everyday relation when material returns to itself and man is no longer attached to the so-called humanness. In Lee Dong Hyuk's recent works, he tries to deconstruct the existing textual language, and through his calm paintings, he takes us into the scene beyond the language, where multiple time and space appear because of the different perspectives. From an epistemological point of view, it is only by entering that "pre-reality" that we can open the door to the real, where every part has its own significance, and in order to do so, we must first look at the behavior and manner of faith with a skeptical eye.

 

갤러리 기체는 2023년 10월 24일 전시 ≪풍경과 깊이≫를 선보인다. 중국 큐레이터 시아옌궈가 기획한 이 전시는 각기 다른 국적을 지닌 다섯 명의 작가 루디 크레모니니, 루카스 카이저, 이동혁, 암바 사얄-베넷, 시용춘의 작품으로 구성된다.

‘풍경’과 ‘깊이’라는 두 개념을 바탕으로 하는 이 전시는 세잔의 예술사상을 통해 현실과 예술의 관계를 재고하고, 쉽게 간과되는 현실을 예술로써 가시화하는 작가의 작업 과정을 분석하며, 이분법적 대응을 벗어나 일종의 깊이를 논하는 예술에 대해 생각하기를 제안한다.


이번 전시에 참여한 다섯 명의 작가는 각자의 풍경과 깊이를 통해 사회적 현실에서 일어나는 다양한 문제를 다룬다. 여기서 관건은 그들이 다루는 문제의 크기가 아니라, 문제를 직면하는 방식과 편견이나 고정관념에서 벗어남과 동시에 새로운 생각을 재가동하는 방식에 있다. 예를 들어, 루카스 카이저의 작품에서 작가는 일상과 옛날 동화의 내용을 자신의 언어로 다시 옮기는 방식으로 왜곡되고 기이한 초현실적 경관을 만들었는데, 이 경관들은 정의할 수 없는 새로운 공간을 만들어 낸다. 또, 루디 크레모니니의 작품에서 풍겨오는 낯섦은 현실이 스스로 ‘물러남’을 통해 드러남을 알게 해준다. 덮치듯 달려드는 그의 이미지는 화면 위에 떠 있는 직관에 가깝다. 암바 사얄-베넷의 작품은 합리적이고 기계적인 질서 안에서 언어에 대한 저항을 구축하며, 각각의 작품은 제각기 자립적인 다원체를 이룬다. 시용춘의 작품에는 집요한 현실적 풍경이 담겨 있다. 그 속에서 일상의 사물은 기능을 상실함으로써 자유를 되찾고, 물질은 자신에게 돌아가며, 인간은 인간이 아닌 것을 생성하면서 일상적 관계 사이에는 새로운 질서가 생겨난다. 이동혁의 최근 작품에서 작가는 기존의 텍스트 언어를 해체하는 시도를 한다. 그의 차분한 회화는 불필요한 시각으로 인해 다중적인 시공간이 등장하는 언어 너머의 현장으로 우리를 이끈다. 인식론적 관점에서 볼 때, 우리는 ‘현실 전의 현실’에 진입해야만 모든 부분이 고유의 의미를 띠는 진실의 문을 열 수 있으며, 그러기 위해서는 먼저 회의적 시선으로 믿음의 행위와 방식을 바라보아야 한다.

Rudy Cremonini (b.1981) is based in his hometown of Bologna, Italy. He has held solo exhibitions at Francesca Antonini Arte Contemporanea (2022, Rome), Capsule Shanghai (2022, Shanghai), 104 Galerie (2021, 2019, Tokyo), Reggia di Caserta (2018, Caserta), and Galerie Thomas Fuchs (2017, 2015, 2013, Stuttgart), among others. He has also participated in various group exhibitions at Triennale Milano (2023, Milan), KICHE (2023, Seoul), Galerie Thomas Fuchs (2022, 2013, Stuttgart), 104 Galerie (2020, Tokyo), Galleria Doris Ghetta (2019, 2015, Ortisei), City Museum of Belgrade (2017, Belgrade), and the Jewish Museum (2016, Bologna), to name a few. He was selected for the 2012 Marina di Ravenna Prize, the 2011 Combat Prize, and the 2010 Italian Factory Prize, among others.

Lucas Kaiser (b.1994) lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. He received his B.F.A. and is now pursuing postgraduate studies in Visual Arts at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. He has held solo exhibitions at Galerie Kleindienst (2023, 2021, Leipzig), This Weekend Room (2023, Seoul), P145 (2020, Berlin), Frauenkircherl (2020, Erding), and Kunstraum Ortloff (2019, Leipzig). He has participated in group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), WESERHALLE (2023, Berlin, Germany), Minuseins (2022, Vienna), Galerie Kleindienst (2022, Leipzig), Werkschauhalle (2022, Leipzig), Museum für Druckkunst (2021, Leipzig), Bode Projects (2021, 2020, Berlin), and more.

Lee Dong Hyuk (b.1985) graduated from Hongik University (Seoul) with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Painting. He has held solo exhibitions at A-Lounge (2022, 2020, Seoul), PROJECT SPACE (2020, Seoul), and Space 9 (2018, Seoul). He has also staged and participated in various group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), New Spring Project (2023, Seoul), Art Space Hohwa (2023, Seoul), KUZO (2023, Seoul), KICHE (2021, Seoul), Hakgojae (2021, Seoul), drawingRoom (2021, Seoul), Mimesis Art Museum (2015, Paju), Gallery Imazoo (2013, Seoul), and Alternative Space LOOP (2012, Seoul).

Amba Sayal-Bennett (b.1991) lives and works in London, UK. She received her B.F.A from Oxford University and her M.A. in the History of Art from The Courtauld Institute. She completed her PhD in Art Practice and Learning at Goldsmiths and her M.A. in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. She has held solo exhibitions at Carbon 12 (2023, 2021, 2019, 2017, Dubai), Somerset House (2023, London), and Indigo+Madder (2020, London), among others. She has participated in various group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), K11 Shanghai (2023, Shanghai), A.P.T. Gallery (2022, 2021, 2016, 2015, London), Indigo+Madder (2022, 2019, London), White Cube (2021, London), Carbon 12 (2020, Dubai), Brunel Museum (2019, London), Royal College of Art (2019, 2018, London), and more. In 2020, she received the Gilbert Bayes Award from the Royal Society of Sculptors.

Shih Yung Chun (b.1978) lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. He received his B.F.A. in the Department of Western Fine Arts from the National Taiwan University of Arts. He has held solo exhibitions at HiArt space (2021, Shanghai), YIRI ARTS (2021, Taipei), Hive Center for Contemporary Art (2019, Beijing), 798 Line-Gallery (2016, 2012, Beijing), Art Experience Gallery (2015, Hong Kong), and more. He has also participated in group exhibitions at KICHE (2023, Seoul), Long Museum West Bund (2022, Shanghai), Hive Center for Contemporary Art (2021, Beijing), FreeS Art Space (2018, Taipei), YIRI ARTS (2018, Taipei), Long Museum Pudong (2013, Shanghai), and more.

루카스 카이저 (b.1994)는 독일 라이프치히에 거주하며 활동하고 있는 작가이다. 그는 라이프치히 국립예술대학 시각예술학과 졸업했으며 더블린 국립 예술 디자인 대학 교환학생 프로그램을 수학했다. 현재 라이프치히 국립예술대학에서 시각예술 석사학위 과정을 진행중이다. 개인전으로는 갤러리 Kleindienst (2023, 2021, 라이프치히), 디스위켄드룸 (2023, 서울), P145 (2020, 베를린), Frauenkircharl (2020, 에르딩), Kunstraum ortloff (2019, 라이프치히)가 있다. 단체전으로는 기체 (2023, 서울), 베저할레 (2023, 베를린), Minuseins (2022, 비엔나), 갤러리 Kleindienst (2022, 라이프치히), Werkschauhalle (2022, 라이프치히), Museum für Druckkunst (2021, 라이프치히), Bode Projects (2021, 2020, 베를린) 등이 있다.

이동혁 작가(b.1985)는 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 및 일반대학원 회화과를 졸업했다. 개인전으로는 에이라운지 (2022, 2020, 서울), 학고재 디자인 프로젝트 스페이스 (2018, 서울), 스페이스 나인 (2018, 서울) 에서 가졌고 기체 (2023, 서울), 뉴스프링 프로젝트 (2023, 서울), 아트스페이스 호화 (2023, 서울), 갤러리 구조 (2023, 서울), 갤러리 기체 (2021, 서울), 학고재 (2021, 서울), 드로잉룸 (2021, 서울), 미메시스 아트 뮤지엄 (2015, 파주), 갤러리 이마주 (2013, 서울), 대안공간 루프 (2012, 서울)등 다수의 그룹전을 가졌다.

암바 사얄-베넷(b.1991)은 옥스퍼드 대학교 순수미술 학사를 졸업하고 코톨드 미술학교에서 미술사학 석사, 골드스미스에서 Art Practice & Learning 박사 학위를 취득했으며 로열 칼리지 오브 아트에서 조형학 석사를 졸업했다. 주요 개인전으로 카본 12 (2023, 2021, 2019, 2017, 두바이), 서머셋 하우스 (2023, 런던), Indigo+Madder (2020, 런던) 등에서 개최했으며, 기체 (2023, 서울), K11 (2023, 상해), A.P.T. Gallery (2022, 2021, 2016, 2015, 런던), Indigo+Madder (2022, 2019, 런던), 화이트 큐브 (2021, 런던), 카본 12 (2020, 두바이), 브루넬 뮤지엄 (2019, 런던), 로열 칼리지 오브 아트 (2019, 2018, 런던) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. 2020년에는 Royal Society of Sculptorsd의 Gilbert Bayes Award를 수상했다.
