Gallery Kiche will hold the second solo exhibition “JPEG SUPPLY” by artist Seungcheol Ok from June 18 to July 25. The artist emphasizes the irony of the so-called light (digital original) image and heavy (art work) image in an extension of the first solo exhibition “UN ORIGINAL”, which focused on the process of crossing digital conventions and art conventions. To this end, the gallery space is set up as a platform that serves the viewers a characteristic “aura” and “distinction”, as well as meets the requirements of art works by giving a typical form, physical shape and texture of the art to the original JPEG. “Meme”, which started from referring to a cultural element that repeats self-replication and duplication, and after the second half of the 90’s was familiar as an internet term describing a specific image online as a form of amusement, is an important keyword that interrogates and solves the intention of the artist.

. OK Seungcheol (b. 1988) lives and works in Seoul. He has held solo exhibitions at Art Sonje Center(2022, Seoul), Space Isu(2021, Seoul) and  KICHE(2020, 2018, Seoul) . The artist has staged various group exhibitions Daejeon Museum of Art(2021, Daejon),  The Great Collection(2021, Seoul), Unit London(2020, London), Superellipse(2020, Seoul), Daegu Museum of Art(2019, Daegu) and Platform L Contemporary Art Center (2019, Seoul).

갤러리 기체는 옥승철 작가의 두 번째 개인전 “JPEG SUPPLY”전을 오는 6월 18일부터 7월 25일까지 개최한다. 작가는 디지털의 관습과 미술의 관습이 교차하는 작업과정에 주목한 첫 개인전 “UN ORIGINAL”의 연장선에서 이른바 가벼운(디지털 원본) 이미지와 무거운(미술 작품) 이미지가 교차하는 아이러니를 부각한다. 이를 위해 갤러리 공간은 원본 JPEG에 미술의 전형적 형식과 물리적 형태, 질감을 부여함으로써 예술작품의 요건을 갖추고, 그 고유의 ‘아우라’, ‘차별성’을 감상자에게 서비스하는 플랫폼으로 설정된다. ‘밈meme’은 그런 작가의 의도를 집약해 풀어내는 중요 키워드이다. 이번 전시는 우선 작가의 디지털 원본 이미지가 회화, 조각 등 예술작품의 전통적 형식부터 굿즈, 앨범, 커스텀에 이르기까지 현실과 가상, 미술과 비미술의 경계를 넘나들며 출력되고, 전유 된다는 데서 출발했다. 그리고 작가는 이미지가 하나로 고착되지 않고 그 안과 밖에서 상호작용하며 여러 형태와 질감으로 구체화하는 과정, 그리고 출력된 외피가 빚어내는 이른바 가벼움과 진지함이 공존(무한 복제 가능한 디지털 이미지와 유일성이 강조되는 회화, 조각이 대비되는)하는 모순을 강조해 동시대성의 틀 안에서 작가적 질문을 상정하고자 한다.
